Riptide Jake Lassiter Series Volume 5 Paul Levine Books

I want to like the character in these books but something about Jake Lassiter, an ex-pro football linebacker turned lawyer, annoys me. He sounds tough, talks tough, is described as looking tough but his actions dictate otherwise. Mostly he seems disconnected and lazy. In this book he's working multiple cases, in constant danger and has fallen in love with an edgy criminal but he seems much more interested in windsurfing. The other stuff seems like boring necessities he forced to deal with in order to keep windsurfing on the weekends. I get the feeling that his heart isn't into it and I feel like I'm struggling along with him...to finish the book that is. Then Jake can get back to doing what he loves. It ain't working for a living.

Riptide Jake Lassiter Series Volume 5 Paul Levine Books Reviews

I believe this is the first of the Jake Lassiter books, and it shows. The characters are not really believable, and the plot tends to meander. I learned far more about wind-surfing than I ever wanted to know. Lassiter's inability to understand the motivation of Lila is pathetic. Still, there was lots of action and interesting locales. I've read some other Lassiter books, and they are much better.
Paul Levine is an author who writes books you just can't put down. Just when you think you know what Jake Lassiter is going to do in a given situation, the game changes.
I like this author and his character, decent story but there are just some things that get glossed over to further the story. How can a guy hold a yacht full of rich people hostage with a gun, by himself and get away once they reach shore? Things like this take a way from the story and need to be tightened up a bit.
Sure, who doesn't like Lassiter? Even when he's bad he's good. So here's this highly improbable book with some cartoon characters and just plain stupid situations - like two lawyers having a fight in the boardroom or other stuff. And you get a little tired of Rigg's Latin lessons. Maybe Levine is trying to line up some teen age fans with the sex stuff. But, like I said who doesn't like Lassiter - just not a good introductory book, but for fans it's okay.
Every time I read a Paul Levine novel I find myself highlighting passages because they are just so good! He thinks of witty, funny ways to phrase things that make me laugh out loud. I love crime-suspense stories and his are some of tge best, but his ability to make them enjoyable is unserpassed.
I've been reading the Lassiter books in order and have really liked all of them, till I came to this. There is none of the vibrancy and humor of the prior books in the series, and this is written in 3rd person, while all the others so far have been in 1st person. I'm used to hearing Lassiter talk about Lassiter. This book is dull as dishwater. I was ready to give up 20% of the way through, but figured it must get better. Now I'm at 33% and I'm throwing in the towel. There may be some thriller here but it hasn't shown up yet. I'm disappointed.
I really wanted to like this book. But, sadly, I did not. The basic story is a good one, but none of the characters are likeable; not even the "hero" who comes off as more of a dufus than a hero. He lets his imagination of a "pure woman" cloud his judgement as said woman is a soulless, stone cold killer. Also, I had to start skipping over the bad poetry scattered throughout the book and the long winded word pictures of the scenery and bits of history and how islands are formed and then sink back in the sea after a few thousand years just to get to the end of the book. The descriptions of the scenery were more poetic than the bad poetry and neither added much to the story except length. I give it 3 stars only for the basis of a good story; but, sadly the author took it in a depressing direction with unsympathetic characters with no moral compass.

This book may be your cup-o-tea, but it certainly was not mine. I will not waste my time with another Paul Levine book. He is certainly NO Elmore Leonard.
